About Russley
The Russley Golf Club is part of the gateway to Christchurch's Garden City. It's only a
few minutes to the International Airport and 10 minutes (15 if there is a traffic jam!) to
Christchurch city center.
Building a new clubhouse was embarked upon in the early 1990's and by October 1994 the
vision became reality. From the new clubhouse you get a wonderful vista of the golf course
as well as a warm, modern building. A function facility hosts many seminars, conferences,
birthday parties and now sees over 24 weddings a year.
Visitors to the course and facilities have been as wide ranging as the sultan of Brunei to
New Zealand's Prime Minister and Governor General. On the course itself some challenging
renovations have been made to keep the course at the standard the club's forefathers would
be proud. These include adding lakes at the sixth and seventh holes, adding lots of new
mounding to Russley's otherwise flat terrain and enlarging the greens.
Russley has a proud history as a venue for tournaments. These include the Men's and
Women's National Amateurs, the Wills Classic which attracted top professionals like Tom
Watson, Kel Nagle and Peter Thompson, the New Zealand Open(Corey Pavin) and the Women's
World Championships amongst others.
Not to break with tradition Russley held a Pro-Am at midnight of the new Millennium.
Players had a great time playing in the depth of darkness, with lights powered by
generators brightening the tees and greens.
Russley was founded on good old kiwi determination and innovation. Our founders went in
search of a new site away from their 12 hole golf course, Hagley Golf Links, for several
reasons. Hagley was over subscribed, not considered as challenging or long enough as the
younger players wanted and because they wanted a course that was open throughout the whole
year. The quest for the current site was achieved in 1927.
The first clubhouse was built in 1929 and was not replaced until 1994. The oldest building
still standing today is the old greenkeeper's shed which was built in approximately 1930.
As you play you can see it gingerly standing to the right of the 11th hole where it looks
like a good Nor' Wester will knock it over!
