GREEN ACRES GOLF CLUB
Bests Island, Nelson
, NZ

The course has an interesting and challenging layout on a base of sand and pebbles, genuine links country, however the course lends itself to a more parkland style. Most fairways are tree lined and there are a good number of well placed bunkers. The sand is not heavy, but some of these bunkers are deep. The terrain undulates and provides plenty of challenging lies. With raised greens on most holes chipping can prove a real challenge.

Throughout New Zealand's north and south islands, you wil find many courses like Greenacres. Although on the water's edge, they are not true links type courses as you will find in Ireland and Scotland. I like to describe these courses as parkland-links. Greenacres is surrounded by water as the course is located on an island with the sea and the mountains in view from most parts of the course

Personally, I am not an avid subscriber of playing golf courses where the greens are elevated grassy mounds. If the greens are small, one is always chipping the same kind of shot without much degree of variation. Obviously not a course in my mind that should be described as a championship course. Nevertheless, as with the many golf courses such as Greenacres, the fairway grass is lush and pleasingly cut and the layout is testing and very scenic. The greens at Greenacres are better than most; varying by size, many offering huge putting surfaces that does require chipping and pitching skills above the norm.

Amusingly, whenever I hear or mention the name Greenacres, I cannot help think of the TV show, Greenacres, featuring Eddie Albert and Ava Gabor. Thank heavens the Greenacres Golf Club is not like the TV show, only the name is the same.
